For these reasons, I want to call Edmund Clowney’s book Called to the Ministry to your attention, and to work through how this book has impacted my own thinking on this issue. Clowney applies larger issues of guidance and decision making to the realm of vocational Christian ministry, and he does so in a succinct but powerful manner. Martin Luther King referred to this inward call as God’s voice heard by faith. Those who have been called by God can recognize this call by a sense of leading, growing commitment, and purpose. Charles Spurgeon further contended that the first sign of God’s call to the ministry is an intense all absorbing desire for the work.

This is a great book for anyone who thinks they may be called to ministry, whether pastoral or not. The book specifically deals with asking questions that revolve around pastoral ministry, but I found the challenges and exhortations helpful for any field of ministry that requires a level of discipline in following Jesus/5. No, I still did not receive a “call”, but I did figure out that I did not need to! I did not need to receive a call because I began to read how ministry is the responsibility of every single one of us! When you read the gospels, you do see Jesus “call” the original 12 disciples into ministry.

This is a rewrite of "Discerning Your Call and Your Gifts for Ministry." This pamphlet is used to explore one's gifts and talents to further explore and possibly pursue the ministry profession. If you are considering the ministry, there are two mistakes you must avoid. The first is taking up a calling that isn’t yours. The second is neglecting one that ning Your Call to Ministry will help you know the difference. A tool for seminary students, pastors File Size: KB.

Testing and Reclaiming Your Call to Ministry. Nashville: Abingdon Press,   Discerning a call to vocational ministry can be a tiring and trying experience. I’ve had the privilege of speaking with numerous young people and couples who are possibly experiencing a call to full-time, vocational missions or ministry.

So, if you sense a call to ministry as the Spirit leads your heart, yield yourself to God to be willing to go in that direction.

Let Him make His timing clear, and be diligent to study the Word (in seminary or on your own) so as to be able to rightly divide it (2 Timothy ).A call to ministry also involves the affirmation of others at some point. Whether your local church or another Christian organization, acceptance with a group of believers offers strong confirmation that God has called you to serve in a vocational role.

So what exactly is a call to ministry? T here is an old joke—so old, in fact, that it may be unknown to a newer generation and, therefore, recyclable. A .
